Olly

Olly was our little Burmese cat who died at the beginning of 2008.

He was three years old and with his entire life still ahead of him when he was hit by a car.

It’s quite a shock when a neighbor suddenly walks in with your pet in a blanket. Fortunately we were home when it happened and we don’t think he suffered.

Olly was quite an adventurous creature right from the start; climbing trees, exploring other people’s kitchen benches and following us all the way to the park. People from all around the neighborhood kept bringing him back to our place because they thought he was just a kitten and then we had to explain that he was just small and adventurous. He made many friends I’m sure…

When Olly was one year old some idiot shot him with a pellet gun (from close range no less). Olly just managed to drag himself inside and then collapsed. We thought we were going to lose him in the car on the way to the vet, but somehow he managed to scrape through. (The bullet still inside)

Now you’d think that that would put any cat off from ever looking at another human being again. Not Olly! He never let it stop him (and getting the treats from everybody for it I’m sure). Needless to say the entire neighborhood knew Olly. Olly even made headlines in the local newspaper and as a result of that we received several phone messages from people we didn’t even know. Go Olly! ;)

Sometimes he was a bit overconfident and I remember one particular occasion where he was ‘trapped’ on the roof (again) and I had to rescue him at approx 6 am in the morning. Thank you very much. :O)

As Olly matured he started looking me up early in the morning for a snuggle. My medication makes me very sleepy at night and I never really woke up for it, but my wife was kind enough to record Olly having 15 minute bathing sessions on my chest and then curling up beside me where I found him after I woke up. Once I got up I just left him in the bed and I’m sure he slept most of the morning away in it. Olly always welcomed me on the fence after a day’s work.

Olly was a big a part of this family and is still very much missed as I’m sure you can tell.

While we were going through all this, friends of ours emailed us the “Rainbow Bridge” story which helped us a lot. It’s a wonderful story about where pets go when they die. You can read it Here.
